Samuel Palmer and the Ancients
Saturday afternoon talk: Samuel Palmer and a group of friends calling themselves The Ancients moved to Kent in the 19th Century to further develop as artists. Inspired by William Blake they created artworks of an idyllic pastoral view infused with the rhythms of Nature. We will explore their art work and review the broader social context of the work.
Saturday 5th September 1.00 pm – 4 pm
Enfield Baptist Church, Speaker – Dr Mark Banting- Cost £30
Talk Outline
Inspired by William Blake’s poetic and mystical images, Samuel Palmer leading a group of friends who called themselves The Ancients, moved to the village of Shoreham in Kent. Intoxicated by the landscape, they created artworks of an idyllic pastoral infused with the rhythms of nature and sacred belief. Exploring these “enchanted landscapes” today, we’ll review the broader social context and ask why the most intense of the Shoreham pictures remained hidden in Samuel Palmer’s “Curiosity” portfolio until the 20th Century and when rediscovered they enthused a new generation of artists.
